The Railway Children Return (PG)

Dir: Morgan Matthews, 2022 | 95 mins

Inspired by one of the most beloved British family films of all time, The Railway Children Return is an enchanting, moving and heart-warming adventure for a new generation.

1944. As life in Britain’s cities becomes increasingly perilous, three evacuee children – Lily, Pattie and Ted Watts – are sent by their mother from Salford to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth. There to meet them on the train station platform are Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter, reprising her iconic role in the original film), her daughter, Annie, and grandson Thomas, and with their help the evacuees are soon settling into their new life in the countryside.

When the children discover injured American soldier Abe hiding out in the railyard at Oakworth Station, they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home.

Starring Jenny Agutter, Sheridan Smith and Tom Courtenay.

Dr Who: Classic Movie Double Bill (PG)

Dir: Gordon Flemyng 1965 / 1966 |182 mins

A brand new 4K restorations of the two classic Dr. Who feature-length films starring award-winning actor Peter Cushing – Dr. Who and the Daleks' and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.

Released initially in 1965 and 1966 respectively and directed by Gordon Flemyng, these two films, shot in glorious Technicolor, have been regenerated in out-of-this-world 4K. The films also boast a beloved supporting cast including Bernard Cribbins, Roberta Tovey, Roy Castle and Jennie Linden.

Dr. Who and the Daleks' (1965) was the first big screen film adaptation of British TV’s most iconic sci-fi hero, and the first time Doctor Who was ever seen in colour. Having invented the Tardis, a strange machine capable of travelling into other dimensions, the Doctor and his three young accomplices set forth on a quest through time and space. Their journey takes them into the dark, undiscovered depths of the universe and to the planet of Skaro, a primitive world devastated by nuclear war and populated by two warring species, a peaceful tribe known as Thals and a life form heavily mutated by radiation, encased in protective machines, a merciless force of destruction known as The Daleks!

The second film, Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D sees Cushing return to the big screen – the future of Planet Earth now belongs to The Daleks, but deep within the London Underground a group of resistance freedom fighters are planning an attack. Can The Doctor help them succeed in destroying their extra-terrestrial enemies and take back control of Earth?

The Good Boss (15)

Dir: Fernando León de Aranoa 2022 | 115 mins

Spanish with English subtitles.

Javier Bardem excels as a corporate boss, who will tell you he’s your best friend just as he’s stabbing you in the back, in this ruthlessly funny corporate satire.

Blanco (Bardem) initially appears to be a kindly, if bland, owner of a factory. ‘Don’t treat me like a boss’, he gestures to his employees. But behind the genial façade lies a selfish profiteer. Blanco is all smiles for a visiting journalist and is intent on keeping morale up so he can win a government award. But when he makes a long-serving employee redundant and takes advantage of his latest intern, cracks start to appear in the industrialist’s world.

Paris, Texas (12A)

Dir: Wim Wenders, 1984 | 146 mins

This unconventional road movie tells the story of Travis (Harry Dean Stanton), a man who wanders out of Mexico and into Texas one day, in the blazing heat of the 'Big Bend'. Travis does not speak a word. He also seems to have largely lost his memory. But he is driven by his wish to find his family again: his young wife Jane (Nastassja Kinski), whose life he seems to have placed in danger through his pathological jealousy, and his seven-year-old son Hunter (Hunter Carson). For four years Travis was thought to be dead. His brother Walt (Dean Stockwell) flies from LA to Texas to bring back his lost brother.

Walt and his wife Ann (Aurore Clément) have become Hunter’s foster parents. It is very difficult for the two of them to now give this role up again, especially when they learn that Travis wants to go out in search of Jane together with his son. They know nothing about her, except that she probably lives in Houston...

In addition to the impressive performances by Harry Dean Stanton as Travis and Nastassja Kinski as Jane, Paris, Texas has also become a cult film on account of the unique soundtrack by Ry Cooder.

'Wim Wenders’ iconic vision of American alienation, starring Stanton as a weatherbeaten drifter, has held its mystery for 40 years' ★★★★★ The Guardian

Hit The Road (12A)

Dir: Panah Panahi, 2021 | 94 mins

Persian with English subtitles.

Dad (Hassan Madjooni) sits moodily in the back with an ostensibly broken leg, while Mom (Pantea Panahiha) drives and tries to laugh when she’s not holding back tears. An energetic youngster (Rayan Sarlak, in a star-making performance) keeps exploding into song and scrambling around the car. All are fussing over their sick dog and getting on each others’ nerves; only the mysterious older brother (Amin Simiar) is quiet.

It’s clear they’re on a road trip across a rugged, often extremely beautiful landscape – but where are they headed?
