Using granulating colours gives interesting texture to watercolour paintings. In this workshop you will learn more about what causes granulation; which colours granulate, what mixtures of colour granulate; how to use granulating medium; and what super-granulating colours are. After experimenting with some granulating colours and techniques you will be invited to paint an imaginative landscape, or an intuitive or abstract composition using these colours and techniques.
Please bring your own materials; watercolour paints, to include two of the following: French Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Cerulean Blue, Green Earth, Ivory or Mars Black.
Some granulating medium will be available at the session and if you are fortunate enough to have any Daniel Smith granulating Primatek paints or any Schminke Supergranulating colours do bring them. I will also have some you can try. Demonstrations will include some of these and the effects of working on different textured papers and the addition of granulating medium and salt to usually non-granulating colours.
Also bring some NOT watercolour paper, brushes, water pots, paper towel, masking tape, drawing board and small wooden block to angle the board. Pencil and small sketchbook for notes.
Some paper will be available from the tutor at cost.

Be inspired by the colder months to work with a limited palette to create winter river and garden paintings. Use watercolour, gouache or pastel to paint icy riverbanks and frosted trees and plants spangled with bright berries. Take in the difference of reflections seen in water and ice and the effects of “broken” water.
Bring your own paints, paper and equipment. For gouache and pastel, coloured papers would be a good choice, preferable 300gsm for gouache. Equipment to include drawing board and a block of wood or table easel, water pots, clips or paper tape to attach paper, sketchbook for composition sketches. Reference will be supplied or bring your own and some paper will be available at cost from the tutor.
24th Oct – 28th Nov (6 weeks)
