Poetry + Identity

Poetry + Identity
Led by Gurpreet Bharya

Exploring the Self through the Lenses of Others, Culture and Art.

In this workshop, we’ll explore poems about identity as a reflection of our roots, the society we live in and the stories we tell ourselves. We’ll also consider how identity is represented through poetic techniques, such as metaphor and symbols.

How does what is concealed shape our identity compared to what is revealed? Who are we in the presence of others – parents, teachers, friends - and how largely do their opinions of us loom over our lives? When do we feel the most power to be our authentic selves? We’ll delve into our own identities and use this as a starting point for our own journeys of self-expression.

In celebration of South Asian Heritage Month, all the poems we’ll look at in this workshop are written by poets of a South Asian background. Join an intimate group of like-minded, curious and enthusiastic writers and learn, create and share your work in a safe and supportive space. All levels of experience are welcome.
