The Bloody Chamber

What are little girls made of?

They are made of the forest floor, the blood of the moon cycle, the fluttering of wings and the turning of keys. They are made of sweat, howling notes and desire. They are made of night scented stock – heady and sweet, the lily and the rose, the knife and the rope.
They are made of all the tales our Mothers told us
And all the ones they didn’t dare.

Award winning Proteus present Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber - an erotic, heady and humour-infused feminist re-telling of some of the most famous folk and fairy tales in western culture.  These dark fantasies are performed by an all-female cast using acro and aerial circus, physical theatre, gothic design and a haunting soundscape.

At a moment when women and men across the country confront the double standards of safety, sex, and the fears of what goes bump in the night, Carter’s incendiary caustic take on fairy tales as cautionary tales could not be a more formidable challenge to the status quo. Director Mary Swan uses circus as a physical vocabulary to translate the fantastical and lyrical fever-dream style of Angela Carter’s macabre fairy tales to the stage.

We invite you deep into the forest for an experience you’ll never forget.

National Theatre Live: Leopoldstadt

A new play by Tom Stoppard, directed by Patrick Marber. Filmed live from the Wyndam’s Theatre in London. The Olivier Award-winning play is a passionate drama of love, family and endurance.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Leopoldstadt was the old, crowded Jewish quarter of Vienna, Austria. But Hermann Merz, a factory owner and baptised Jew now married to Catholic Gretl, has moved up in the world.

We follow his family’s story across half a century, passing through the convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. A company of 40 actors represent each generation of the family in this epic, but intimate play.
