Flood, Spatter and Scratch: Six weeks of watercolour techniques

Taking inspiration from Turner’s watercolours we’ll explore how loose washes can contrast with a few hard-edged details to dramatic effect.

Info on the equipment and materials to bring is detailed below.

Watercolour paper; Cold pressed or rough at least 300gsm as we will be working with very wet washes.
Brushes; at least one large brush size 7 or more and two smaller size 3 or 4 and size 1 or 2 with good points.
Watercolour paints; useful palette to include a warm and cool of each of the primary colours; e.g. vermilion or cadmium red light and crimson alizarin cadmium, yellow deep or other more orange yellow and lemon yellow, ultramarine blue and phthalo blue green shade or cerulean blue
Other useful colours are yellow ochre or raw sienna, burnt umber, burnt sienna and dioxazine purple.
Masking tape, paper towel, natural sponge if you have one,
Drawing board and wooden block to tilt the board
Two water pots, pencil, craft knife, palette
