An evening of Indian music and dance will be held on Saturday 24 January at 7pm. The programme features a solo sitar recital by Mick Taylor and Kathak dance by Alpana Sengupta, both accompanied by tabla.
Alpana Sengupta is a brilliant specialist of the vivid and mesmerizing Kathak style of Indian classical dance. A leading pioneer in raising the awareness of Indian dance throughout Britain, Alpana’s performances have been described as breathtaking and magical but above all, entertaining and fun.
Mick Taylor is one of a very few western exponents on the sitar, to have excelled and reached the status of solo concert artist, not only in the west, but in also India. He is widely acknowledged as a fine exponent of the difficult ‘gayaki-ang’ or vocal style of sitar playing and his playing is especially noted for its depth of feeling (raag-dari) and for its authenticity. Together with his wife, distinguished Kathak dancer Alpana Sengupta, he has been a pioneering influence in developing the interest and awareness of Indian music and dance throughout Britain since 1976. As a professional musician, he has performed extensively throughout Britain and Europe as well as regularly in India, where he has given recitals at various prestigious venues. He has composed and provided music for television and films as well as for several Indian dance ballets.
