She'Koyokh - First Dance on Second Avenue

Described by The Guardian as 'one of the finest British-based exponents of global music', She’Koyokh is a virtuosic, versatile and prize-winning band playing klezmer and Sephardic music and songs from the Balkans and Turkey.

Their latest album, First Dance on Second Avenue, was nominated in the 2018 Songlines World Music Awards and received 5 stars in the Evening Standard and fROOTS.

Their show is an intoxicating and inspiring blend of vocals, clarinet, flute, bagpipes, guitar, accordion, double bass and percussion. Their members hail from Turkey, the Balkans and the UK and their repertoire is rooted in tradition. From Jewish weddings, Romanian mountains, Serbian villages, Bulgarian festivals and Turkish saunas, each song has a story to tell about love, life, sadness and joy. There is a saying in the Balkans that this music makes you cry and dance at the same time.

WHY? The band are regular visitors to BBC Radio 3 and recently composed and performed a klezmer concerto as a prelude to Mahler’s 1st Symphony with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
