Royal Opera House Live: Giselle (12A)

Encore screening of the 2016 production from the Royal Opera House.

The greatest of all Romantic ballets, Peter Wright’s production of Marius Petipa’s classic is a tale of betrayal, the supernatural and love that transcends death. Starring Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov.

The role of Giselle provides the dancer with many technical and dramatic challenges, from the character’s early love to her poignant descent into madness and her final gesture of forgiveness from beyond the grave. The first act of the ballet is filled with historical detail and rustic colour. By contrast, the second, ‘white’ act plunges the audience into an eerie moonlit forest haunted by the ethereal Wilis.

WHY? With its combination of memorable story and exquisite choreography, Giselle is the perfect way to discover classical ballet

Uncle Vanya

Filmed at the Harold Pinter Theatre, London in August 2020.

Sonya (Aimee Lou Wood) and her Uncle Vanya (Toby Jones) while away their time on an isolated estate, visited occasionally only by the local doctor Astrov (Richard Armitage).

However, when Sonya’s father Professor Serebryakov (Roger Allam) suddenly returns with his restless, alluring, new wife Yelena (Rosalind Eleazar), polite facades crumble and long repressed feelings start to emerge. As the conflicted family are forced to confront their despair, loneliness and each other, can the beauty of life help them find new hope?

A new adaptation of the Anton Chekhov masterpiece by Conor McPherson directed by Ian Rickson. As the majority of theatres across the world remain in darkness, Uncle Vanya’s exquisite ensemble overcome the considerable challenges of working in a global pandemic, returning to the Harold Pinter Theatre to film the production, which is currently nominated for four Olivier Awards.

WHY? Full of tumultuous frustration and hidden passions, but brimming with hope and optimism for the future, Uncle Vanya is a must-see event for our times
