Pinocchio

Visit the incredible world of Stuff and Nonsense as they bring Pinocchio to our stage for Christmas 2024.

This is the unique story of ‘when dad was made of wood’...

One cold night Pinocchio, Geppetto and Sonny go on a journey in search of a place to live. Little do they know the house they’re staying in is a playground for their imaginations...

Join the trio as they embark on adventures to the land of play, inside a whale and much more! Will Pinocchio ever turn back into a real boy?

Stuff and Nonsense are leaders in family theatre. Their adaptation of Pinocchio combines classic elements of the story – a poor woodcarver, the tell-tale growing nose, the dream of becoming a real boy – with their hallmark hilarity, skilled puppetry, original music, fantastic staging, outstanding performers and extraordinary physical tricks.

Invest in your children’s imaginations: join us in the theatre and take playfulness home with you!

'Oodles of festive fun, silliness, and joy, Norden Farm’s take on the classic tale is what every kid needs this Christmas' Muddy Stilettos

'The actors move seamlessly between the characters and the show is peppered with music. it’s also really funny! It really felt like a show that would ignite the imagination of children watching it' Red Kite Days

'A very clever and creative way to tell the story of Pinocchio and a definite must see this Christmas' Face2Face Maidenhead

'Pinocchio and his father Geppetto have many adventures on the way with the imagination of the young audience egging them on' Marlow FM

Modern research has demonstrated its effectiveness in health improvement. Qigong philosophy has been absorbed into Tai Chi.

Intermediate Yoga

Led by Julie Potter

This class is suited to those who have been practising for at least 6. My intention for this class is to move our practise forward, explore different avenues and approaches to the traditional postures. We will be aiming to be going deeper into ‘awareness’ and ‘noticing’.

The yoga I teach is an evolution of over 20 years of practice and study, perhaps moving away from ‘external’ evaluation of the postures and moving towards an ‘internal’ sense of the postures, moving away from the more used traditional approach of systemised yoga to a more experiential approach. Whilst looking at traditional Hatha Yoga postures and pranayamas, I will be encouraging fun and freedom within the traditional structure, whilst taking into our awareness fundamental anatomical and functional aspects required by our bodies for maximum wellbeing benefits.

Please bring a blanket, a yoga / Pilates mat, and wear loose comfortable clothing.

The Jo Harrop Quartet (vocals)

Presented by Norden Farm Jazz Club.

Jo Harrop (vocals)
Alex Hutton (piano)
Ben Hazleton (bass)
Tbc (drums)

The quartet will swing through some colourful new arrangements and medleys using the back catalogue of Ella Fitzgerald, Sara Vaughan, Anita O'Day Oscar Peterson as a point of reference.

The programme will also allow for Harrop’s award winning song-writing. It will show case material from her latest album Path Of A Tear , recorded in Los Angeles.

The Path Of A Tear is an ear-watering slice of mid-70s soul with a sublime shot of jazz and a subtle twist of Americana.

Jo Harrop possesses one of the most unmistakable voices in contemporary jazz, yet she has soul running through her veins. The Path Of A Tear, Harrop’s fourth album on London-based jazz label, Lateralize Records, suggests an artist determined to keep moving forward as she dives into unchartered musical waters.

Having won widespread critical acclaim for her last two albums, The Heart Wants and When Winter Turns To Spring, The Path Of A Tear sees Harrop finding her voice as a writer with elegant, confessional songs of unflinching honesty.

Few artists can convey the depth of emotion Harrop evokes every time she opens her heart to sing. Anyone who hears her music knows exactly how she feels; the smouldering sadness flowing through her voice speaks for itself. Her songs are where she lives. Music is a form of catharsis for Jo Harrop, an award-winning artist who would rather show you her battle scars than her trophies.

'This girl was born to sing jazz, all the warmth and sensibility to melt even the chilliest of hearts' Blues and Soul Magazine

'Harrop has Excellent tone and great stage prescence' Marlbank

'Her voice is amazing, think Isaly whiskey, or tannin rich red wine - deep' Lance, Bebop Spoken Here

Align and Flow Yoga

Led by Deborah Le Vene-Page

Align and Flow Yoga is influenced by the biomechanics and heart orientated philosophy of the Anusara Hatha style of yoga. With a specific alignment focus within the flow of postures the practice will tone and strengthen the body, improve posture and create more freedom in the body and mind resulting in a calm and relaxed state of being.

Each week there will be a different theme weaving its’ way through the session, but a typical class starts with breathing techniques to centre and ground, poses to warm up and then progresses to a fun and challenging mix of vinyasa and alignment yoga.

This class is designed to cultivate focus, stamina, strength, and flexibility. Leaving time at the end for a well-deserved relaxation.

Redacted Poems from Rejection Emails

Artist and producer Abhi Arumbakkam attempts to take the sting out of rejections by repurposing them as poetry.

Since 2013 Berkshire-based creative Abhi has been keeping hold of every rejection email she’s received. These range from funding bid denials to job application rejections, amounting to an impressive 258 knock-backs so far.

Drawing inspiration from American artist Austin Kleon's redacted poetry, Abhi has worked alongside local artist Grace Derriman. This exhibition is Abhi's attempt to find hidden poetry amidst all the rejections. It is Abhi’s way of turning lemons into lemonade — or, as she puts it, making manure from waste.

The exhibition is also an invitation to the audience to turn their hand at redacting email texts to discover poetry within them. Abhi firmly believes that rejection is inherent in any creative process, and that it should be embraced with both courage and vulnerability. For her, rejection isn’t a mark of shame but a badge of honour, a pertinent reminder to celebrate the inevitable fallout of daring to try.

Visitors to the exhibition will have a chance to create their own poems by redacting Abhi’s rejections emails. They can share their creations using #rejectionredacted.

Beginners/Gentle Yoga

Led by Julie Potter

This class is particularly suited to beginners, those returning to yoga having had a break, those with specific injuries or conditions or even those that consider themselves to be of a ‘certain age’ that might need a less challenging approach. We will cover general breathing practises, the basic and gentler postures, together with general information and possible discussion around movement and the potential difficulties we might come up against.

The aim will be to relax and enjoy.

The yoga I teach is an evolution of nearly 30 years of practice and study, with a broad experience of many styles and teachers. In recent years I have been moving away from ‘external’ evaluation of the postures and moving towards an ‘internal’ sense of the postures, moving away from the more used traditional approach of systemised yoga to a more experiential and ‘felt’ approach, influenced by teachers who have been inspired by the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli.

Please bring a blanket, a yoga / Pilates mat, and wear loose comfortable clothing

Baby Signing

Led by Funky Monkeys

Have you ever wondered what your baby is thinking or feeling? Would it help if they could communicate those thoughts and feelings to you?

Sign & Rhyme teaches parents/carers and their little ones, simple sign language that enables them to communicate before speech takes over. Just like waving and clapping, your baby can learn to tell you when they’re hungry, in pain or just that they’ve seen a dog! This is empowering to them and hugely rewarding for you! In most cases babies who sign learn to talk sooner than their non-signing peers.

Signs are used in class, like actions, to accompany songs and nursery rhymes and with an array of props, puppets, instruments and the use of disco lights, bubbles and parachutes to enhance the sensory experience and make learning more fun.

There's also:
* Free on-site parking
* Café (open all day)
* Baby changing facilities

Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Carers all welcome with their babies under 18 months

Kirtan

Led by Janette Moy

Kirtan is the practice of gathering together to chant universal mantras. It is the Yoga of Sound, the repetition of the mantras allows us to experience a meditative state. The mantras help relax the mind and re-energise the body/mind as well as release stress/ worries. It is uplifting and healing.

Anyone can join in, you do not have to be able to sing to chant, each of us has a unique primal sound to express and all our voices blend together into one sound. You can sit on the floor or a chair if you need support, you can also stand, move or lay down if you want.

Please bring a cushion or blanket rolled up to sit on. You might like to bring a shawl or blanket around you (not essential, just cosy). If you require a chair please arrive early to give time to organise this. Bring water to drink.

I look forward to sharing these medicinal mantras with you.

Holocaust Memorial Day: Nicky's Family

Dir: Matej Minac 2011 | 96 mins

The remarkable true story of Maidenhead resident Sir Nicholas Winton, who rescued over 600 Jewish Czech and Slovak children at the outbreak of World War II.

Sir Nicholas did not speak about these events for more than half a century. His exploits would have probably been forgotten if his wife, fifty years later, hadn't found a suitcase in the attic, full of documents and transport plans. Today the story of this rescue is known all over the world.

The screening marks Holocaust Memorial Day – the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

It will be followed by a presentation hosted by Nick Winton, son of 'Nicky'.

One Life (12)

Dir: James Hawes 2023 | 110 mins

Telling the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton.

Sir Nicholas Winton was a young London broker who, along with Trevor Chadwick and Doreen Warriner of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia, rescued 669 children from the Nazis in the months leading up to World War II.

Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?

Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England. It’s not until a live BBC television show, That’s Life!, surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children – now adults – that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.

Starring Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonathan Pryce and Romola Garai.

All We Imagine As Light (15)

Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope

Mark Farrelly (Howerd's End, Jarman) brings his hugely-acclaimed solo play to Norden Farm for an up-close encounter with the original Englishman in New York.

From a conventional upbringing to global notoriety via The Naked Civil Servant, Quentin Crisp was one of the most memorable figures of the twentieth century. Openly gay as early as the 1930s, Quentin spent decades being beaten up on London’s streets for refusing to be anything less than himself. His courage, and the philosophy that evolved from those experiences, inspire to the present day.

Naked Hope depicts Quentin at two phases of his extraordinary life. Alone in his Chelsea flat in the 1960s, certain that life has passed him by, and thirty years later, performing An Evening with Quentin Crisp in New York.

Packed with witty gems on everything from cleaning (Don’t bother – after the first four years the dust won’t get any worse) to marriage (Is there life after marriage? The answer is no), Naked Hope is a glorious, uplifting celebration of the urgent necessity to be your true self.

Nic Meier and Friends (guitars)

Presented by Norden Farm Jazz Club.

Nic Meier (guitars)
Alex Hutton (piano)
Marianne Windham (bass)
Tbc (drums)

UK based guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved a reputation out as one of the world's most original and uniquely talented guitarists. Drawing from a love of Turkish, Eastern & Middle Eastern music, Flamenco, Tango and more - all mixed with jazz. Meier's versatility and musical fluency extends well beyond that, even (so much so, that his considerable talents drew the attention of rock guitar legend, Jeff Beck, who made Nicolas a mainstay in The Jeff Beck Group carrying him on two world tours during the course of the last several years).

Meier originally hails from Switzerland; born in 1973, to parents who are great lovers of the arts. Never short on ambition, Meier founded his own record label, MGP Records, in 2009. To date, he's produced twelve albums as a solo artist in various group formats (The Nicolas Meier Group, Nicolas Meier Trio, Eclectica!, Nicolas Meier World Group), with his heavy metal band, Seven7, and in a duo format, with long-time partner, fellow guitarist and collaborator, the fabulous UK master, Pete Oxley.

Meier’s sound is rooted in his love of playing jazz on acoustic guitar, especially his Godin nylon-string guitar. It’s a sound that lends itself especially well to flamenco and middle-eastern music, also and conveniently so, as these influences, and more, are brilliantly fused in his unique multi-lingual style. He also plays fretless acoustic guitar, the Saz (a traditional Turkish stringed instrument), electric guitar, steel-string acoustic guitar, glissentar (an 11-stringed fretless instrument) and a baglama. By 2022 a new World Group studio album called Magnificent came out. A 3 CD package including Live and Stories! To promote this release, lots of UK concerts and a European tour of 11 dates opening for rock guitar legend Steve Vai.

Tonight’s show will be a nod towards the influence of Pat Metheny and a celebration of jazz standards that has had an impact upon Nic’s musical development. It will be a colourful blend of jazz, rock and European folk influenced Jazz.

Glass Optics

Led by Bombina Glass

Fusing glass is the process of melting pieces of glass together in a kiln to create a solid, single piece of glass. This process can be used to create various objects such as bowls, vases, and sculptures.

Fused glass can be created using different techniques, including adding colour, texture, and design using materials like glass stringers.

The fusing process involves controlling the temperature and time in the kiln to achieve the desired result.

Glass optics fusing with stringers is a technique in which thin threads of fusible
glass known as stringers are fused together to create unique patterns in fused glass creations. This technique uses volume control and displacement to physically change the shape of lines, creating an appearance like a graph of harmonic waves.

The class teaches how to distort a linear pattern of stringers into a repeatable and intentional pattern, and how the chemicals in glass can react together to add interest and patterns in the final fused creation. The class aims to expand the knowledge of fusing enthusiasts and beginners a like and allows for the creation of a 15cm x 15cm glass bowl using a variety of colours of glass and stringers.

All materials and equipment are provided, and the workshop lasts for three hours.

During the workshop, we will look at some samples of work that can be produced and discuss patterns, colour combinations, and the effects of glass reactions. After, we will cut the stringers and arrange them on the tile to go into the kiln for an overnight firing.

The pieces will be ready and posted to you after the class.

Live Music Lunch Club: A Brief History of Music

A new regular spot for lovers of live music who prefer their concerts in the daytime, alongside a little lunch, in a relaxed environment.

Performances take place in the Studio in a cabaret set up so you can come and go during the music if you want to.

The ticket price includes a pre-show two course lunch from our Café Bar.

The latest show from acclaimed musicians Chris Green and Sophie Matthews takes in 600 years of musical history in 90 minutes. Beginning in the Middle Ages and ending up in the 20th century (and incorporating everything in between!) this fun and fast-moving show is a whistle-stop tour of Western musical history.

Featuring long forgotten songs and tunes (not to mention jokes!) Chris and Sophie paint a vibrant and vivid picture of our musical DNA, mixing the familiar and the obscure, the raucous and the reflective and the courtly and the commonplace.

The show combines the vigour of the medieval period, the musical intricacy of the Renaissance, the grandeur of the Baroque and the pomp and bombast of Victoriana. Add to that the wit of Blackadder and 1066 And All That and the stage is set for a veritable musical feast!

Complete with a bewildering array of instruments such as cittern, rauschpfeife and virginal (and that’s just the first 100 years!) A Brief History of Music uses tunes, songs and humour to take you on a musical journey from which you won’t want to return!

From diving with sharks, to sitting in a shed in Vietnam with a former health secretary (and discovering that MPs aren’t the only parasites she has to worry about). The host of BBC’s Lightning, a regular on Have I Got News For You, QI, and Mock The Week – and a survivor of Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins and World’s Most Dangerous Roads on Dave – Zoe is one of the country’s best-loved comedians.

Ainsley Hamill

Mix Heather Small and Julie Fowlis and you've got singer songwriter Ainsley Hamill.

One of the UK’s leading and most diverse singers, Ainsley has a long list of nods including the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year Finalist and Gaelic Singer of the Year Finalist at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.

She represented Scotland at Eurovision in Gothenburg and has appeared at folk festivals the world over, including The Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Celtic Connections and du Bout du Monde for the last 10 years. Hamill has recently been included in The List’s 2024 Hot 100, of the most influential Scottish cultural contributors.

With the release of her debut feature album Not Just Ship Land. Produced by BBC composer Malcolm Lindsay, Ainsley showcases her songwriting ability, inspired by the surroundings and unsung heroes of Govan and Glasgow. Ainsley’s new album will be released in Summer 2024 and centred around trad Scottish Gaelic, Scots and self-penned songs that are inspired by the Scottish landscape and people.

Hailing from the West Coast of Scotland, Ainsley specialises in song writing and songs in Scottish Gaelic and English. Her love of Gaelic song was nurtured whilst studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Trad roots are close to her heart. With this new album however, Ainsley is exploring new sounds and ideas as she pushes out from these roots to create personal material that encompasses big topics close to her heart, including feminism and equality, while unearthing forgotten stories and places that deserve a voice.

For many years Ainsley performed and toured with folk bands Barluath and made appearances with The Unusual Suspects. During this time, her accomplished song writing skills were evident in Barluath’s two studio albums; Source and At Dawn of Day as well as various singles including Touch the Gate and At the Fair.

Ainsley is a current member of folk band Fourth Moon, performing Gaelic, English and her own material, as well as step dancing.

‘Her voice thick with velvet and mirk…hovering between the comforting warmth of The Breath and the whip-smart forlorness of early Adele…Hamill has a big intriguing voice, it’s Scottishness ever present’ The Guardian

Romeo and Juliet

Presented by OVO.

Two households, both alike in dignity. In broken Belfast, where we lay our scene...

A brand new adaption set on the streets of Northern Ireland’s capital in 1998 - the year that the Good Friday agreement was signed.

From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, a pair of star-crossed lovers take their lives.

Led with movement and a banging 90s soundtrack played by a live band, this is a high paced, modern take on a timeless classic.

OVO’s fresh take shows us that Shakespeare is as relevant today as it’s always been and that a fragile peace is only as durable as opposing sides permit.

The Benn Clatworthy Quartet (sax, flute)

Presented by Norden Farm Jazz Club.

Benn Clatwothy (sax, flute)
Alex Hutton (piano)
Simon Thorpe (bass)
Matt Home (drums)

Back by popular demand!

Benn was active in the London Music Scene in the 1970’s and was a protégé of Ronnie Scott. He moved to L.A. California in 1980 where he is now based. He was recommended for Horace Silver’s band and recordings followed. Having skills as a multi-instrumentalist (tenor, alto, baritone sax, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet) he has carved a career in the L.A music scene. He has worked with a huge array of class A musicians from the LA Philharmonic Orchestra to Cab Calloway. However, his main passion is playing Tenor Sax in a quartet setting – and his approach is unique. Playing from the songbook of Blue Note and more contemporary jazz, his tone is extraordinarily beautiful, and his melodic ideas come from the heart. As someone said recently 'it’s as though he’s talking to us and telling us a story through the saxophone!’

What to watch out for – The ballads will be enchanting, the up-tempo songs will be invigorating.

Pulman & Stilgoe - A Couple Of Swells

This is old-fashioned glamour in the company of two, modern-day musical greats.

A Couple of Swells is the inspired pairing of two unique entertainers.

Liza Pulman, songstress, comedienne and one-third of the iconic Fascinating Aida, and virtuoso pianist, songwriter and singer Joe Stilgoe. Together they combine humour and musicianship at the very highest level, making old songs sound new and new songs feel like you’ve known them all your life.

Both born in the proverbial trunk, their style has been fine-tuned from cradle to stage. Together they have the musical and theatrical chemistry of Dudley Moore and Julie Andrews, or Barbara Cook and Wally Harper.

Prepare to be swept away by Joe’s dazzling piano playing, Liza’s exquisite vocals and their beautiful, tight harmonies as they dig into the true classics and hidden gems of Irving Berlin, Paul McCartney, Jerome Kern, Billy Joel and Leonard Bernstein, mixed with a few new songs specially written for the show.

Liza Pulman
Pulman’s career began at Glyndebourne Opera and has encompassed music, theatre and over twenty years as one-third of Britain’s best-selling satirical comedy trio, Fascinating Aida. This much-loved satirical comedy group has just completed 100 sell-out shows across the UK including three nights at the London Palladium and are set to return for a run of shows at the Royal Festival Hall in January 2025.

Liza’s solo career as a concert performer and recording artist has showcased a talent for rediscovering, reinventing and reimagining timeless classics and lost gems. Most recently, Liza Pulman - Streisand played West End runs to packed houses and five-star reviews, and a new show, The Heart Of It, started its 2023 tour at The Other Palace in London.

Joe Stilgoe
Stilgoe is an internationally acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter, known for writing songs that feel like classics, and adapting classics so they sound like they’ve just been written. Most recently, Joe arranged and accompanied Hannah Waddingham’s performance of Time After Time at the BAFTA Film Awards and opened this year’s Olivier Awards with his arrangement of Anything Goes.

Growing up surrounded by music, Joe’s career extends across theatre, TV and radio. He’s a regular on Radio 4 on shows including Loose Ends and The Horne Section and he has worked with some of the finest orchestras and bands in the world. Joe has released eight albums, five of which topped the UK Jazz chart.

The Farmer and The Clown

Presented by Flibbertigibbet Theatre.

Flibbertigibbet Theatre is delighted to announce that after a successful tour this year, The Farmer and The Clown, will be retouring nationally in Spring 2025. A wordless show for all ages, featuring dance, physical comedy and live music.

The story is about an unlikely friendship between an old farmer living in the middle of nowhere, and a baby clown, who has fallen from the back of a passing circus train. What happens when someone from a different world, lands in the world of another? The story delicately explores themes of loneliness, friendship, and care, across the divisions of age and community.

The Farmer and The Clown is an adaptation of the picture book by the multiple award-winning author and illustrator, Marla Frazee, whose book, Boss Baby became an international animation hit for Dreamworks and 20th Century Fox.

The beautiful pictures from the book were our storyboard, and took inspiration from silent movies, such as Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid, which, despite being over 100 years old, can still make audiences laugh and cry.

Playing without words, the show is accessible to a wide range of audiences. We worked with a Visual Language consultant and Deaf Access Support consultant, to ensure that the physical language created for the storytelling is clear and accessible for all audiences, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Anyone who does not speak English can still enjoy the show as language is not an issue.

‘UTTERLY HEARTWARMING AND RELATABLE…. What Flibbertigibbet have created is a beautiful, simple, and charming piece of theatre, suitable for all' Bristol 24/7

'The Farmer and The Clown has been created with such care, skill, artistry and talent that like all very special pieces of theatre it stays with you long after the event, feeding your soul and reminding you of how magical an experience theatre can be. Where Rio de Janeiro Meets Bahia

Mario Bakuna (acoustic guitar and vocals) and Uccio Gaeta (drums).

Mario Bakuna invites Uccio Gaeta to present the repertoire of the album 'Where Rio de Janeiro Meets Bahia', recorded in Paris, which brings together the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of the Recôncavo Baiano and the charm and subtlety of Bossa Nova.

The show is a trip to Rio de Janeiro, cradle of Bossa Nova, and to Bahia, the city that best represents the powerful African influence in Brazilian music. The concert integrates the rhythmic roots of Brazilian music and its sophisticated harmonies in a beautiful duo show that celebrates great Brazilian composers such as Dorival Caymmi and Tom Jobim. Mario and Uccio promise to transport the audience to a place where the real and the imaginary are experienced and enhanced by poetry and music.

Mario Bakuna is a London-based Brazilian composer, arranger, singer and guitar player. A graduate of the Free University of Music in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he studied with musicians such as Olmir Stocker, Roberto Sion and Roberto Bomilcar (the pianist who played with Frank Sinatra during his visit to Brazil).

Mario's focus is on the development of a music repertoire inspired by the greats of Afro-Brazilian Music, Samba, Jazz and Bossa Nova. In addition to developing new arrangements of music by enshrined Brazilian artists such as Tom Jobim, Dorival Caymmi, Paulo Moura, and João Donato, in recent years he has been working on reinterpretations of Samba Jazz: a musical genre that emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s and was led by musicians like Luiz Eça, Tamba Trio, and Edson Machado inspired by the Post-Bossa Nova movement.

Since settling in London Mario Bakuna has become a prominent figure and a reference in the Brazilian Jazz music scene in England.

Mario widely performs in Europe and beyond at distinguished venues and festivals alongside artists such as Jean Toussaint, Liam Noble, Ricardo dos Santos, Cacau Queiroz, Edmundo Carneiro, Alain Jean Marie, Dudu Penz, and Filó Machado. In Brazil, Mario Bakuna has played alongside the trombonist Itacir Bocato, guitarist Renato Consorte, and pianist Nelson Aires, to name a few.

The concerts of his 2 albums 'Where Rio de Janeiro Meets Bahia' and 'Brazilian Landscapes' toured 18 European countries including: Brazil, Madagascar, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Recently he has been in Canada for a few sold-out concerts with great acclaim.

'Mario Bakuna, a sparkling guitarist, plays with palpable feeling - his virtuosic fluency on the fretboard is controlled and flourishes are perfectly placed. His voice has a texture like heavy cloth.' Songlines Magazine

'Mario Bakuna, a man who exudes music. (…) ‘vocals’ doesn’t begin to do him justice: his expressive range and the precision with which he was able to deploy it was truly the band’s fifth instrument. (…) And he did this while playing guitar with precision and finesse.' The Whitman Review, Wakefield Jazz

Imar

Presented by RM Promotions.

The Irish / Manx / Scottish quintet are BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners. They are amongst Glasgow’s hottest folk property.

They have a wide reaching fanbase throughout the UK, Europe, USA and Canada. The quintet have fast become one of the trad scene's most talked about group. It's thanks in no small part to their debut video L’Air Mignonne becoming a viral smash in 2016. It catapulted the group to the attention of audiences and media worldwide.

Their two albums - Afterlight and Avalanche - have since amassed a devoted listenership. Live audiences are transfixed by their collective and individual technical prowess.

The line up includes Adam Brown (bodhrán), Adam Rhodes (bouzouki), Mohsen Amini (concertina), Ryan Murphy (uilleann pipes) and Tomás Callister (fiddle). They all share a strong background in Irish music. It is a grounding that underpins many of Ímar’s distinctive qualities, in both instrumentation and material.

The shared cultural heritages between Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man are well documented: all three once shared the same Gaelic language, and a similar, clearly potent, kinship endures between their musical traditions.

'Striking musicianship, artful arrangements and sheer absolute delight' Songlines

'Genuinely jaw-dropping collective virtuosity supplied frills to burn' ★★★★★ The Scotsman

'The energy that’s seemingly bursting to let loose is tempered by a variety of instrumental formations and an attention to pacing that showcases the tunes’ melodic strength, and even when the floodgates open the effect is all the more exhilarating for the underlying control and musicality' The Herald

Avalon Edinburgh Preview: Marise Gaughan and Bella Hull

A double header of comedy as two top comedians warm up ahead of the Edinburgh Festival.

Marise Gaughan

Marise Gaughan is a critically acclaimed comedian and author from Dublin.

In 2022 Marise’s debut memoir, Trouble, was published by Monoray. It was described by The Irish Times as ‘a graphic, explicit, often visceral memoir that engulfs the reader’ as it traces Marise’s unravelling through sex, self-destruction and a near-miss with Scientology. The book went on to be an Irish Bestseller and received fantastic reviews in the press. It was published in paperback in 2023 and Marise is currently working on her first novel.

As a stand-up comedian, Marise started her career in Los Angeles, appearing in on stages including The Comedy Store and The Hollywood Improv. Since returning to the UK, her debut stand-up show Drowning explored her father’s (successful) suicide attempt and her own (unsuccessful) one. It premiered at the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2019 where it was nominated for the Fringe’s Spirit of Wit Moira Brady Averill Award for artists whose work defies categorisation with bold and unconventional material and for the First Fortnight Award for shows that challenge stigma and prejudice about mental health. Marise was subsequently awarded the Women’s Irish Network Arts Bursary. She has also supported acts including Rob Delaney, Ari Shaffir and Jim Norton on tour.

'Gaughan’s humour is dark, biting, and painfully honest, but it is in the moments when she is being gentler to herself that her words are at their most transcendent' Irish Independent

'Trouble is an outstanding memoir, a text on addiction that gets to the heart of its implicit trauma and complications. Gaughan has a remarkable voice, self-assured yet vulnerable, frank to a staggering degree – and likeable even in her darkest moments' The Business Post

'An outstanding text on addiction and girlhood, equal parts vulnerable and witty' The Business Post

Bella Hull

Bella Hull is a stand-up comedian and writer. She is one of the UK’s most exciting young comedians and her television appearances include BBC’s Stand Up for Live Comedy, ITV’s The Stand Up Sketch Show and Comedy Central Live.

The Royal Ballet: Ballet to Broadway: Wheeldon Works

Event cinema screening.

Fool's Paradise
Luminescent and shimmering, Fool’s Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon’s many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon’s own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.

The Two Of Us
The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.

Us (Duet)
Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson’s music.

An American In Paris (Ballet)
The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon’s extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards. The full musical depicts a blossoming romance between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.
